 Setting Up A Xmas Tree

For over 20 years Grobe's Christmas Tree Country has exclusively sold the Gunnard Four Brace Christmas Tree Stand in Waterloo Region. Hundreds of our own tree set ups and many hundreds of happy customers know that it is unparalleled for its combination of ease of set up, size of reservoir, lifetime warranty, and its amazing ability to make even the 'crookedest', most poorly balanced, and heaviest of Christmas trees stand straight and tall with so little work.  The days of 'tying the tree to the wall' are over!

In the next series of panels one of our experienced Grobe Christmas Tree Staff members will show you just how easy setting up a Christmas tree can be. On average, from start to finish, this process probably doesn't take more than about 20-30 minutes, with two people working together. It is possible for one person to set up a tree with this stand, but there is a slightly different technique used to accomplish it.

If you wish to have your tree set up, instead of attempting it yourself, we would be most happy to set your tree up in a 4-Brace stand for you.

Clicking on an image will present a larger and more detailed image for your review.

Place Gunnard Four-Brace stand on a level surface. Take each brace arm and lay it flat in the pan as shown, with the wing nut end closest to the centre peg. Unscrew wing nuts about 2/3 out the threaded rod. Put stand in the centre of an opened Christmas tree removal bag in its final location (omitted in this image for clarity).

Setting up the tree is MUCH EASIER with a tree that has been baled (wrapped) in mesh for transport. This can be done for you at Grobe's for a small donation to KidsAbility. Ensure that the end of the tree has a fresh cut of at least 1" from the end, to open up the wood pores so that the Tree Life Tree Nutrient can be drawin up from the reservoir. This important step should be done within 1 hour or less of actually setting the tree into the stand with Tree Nutrient. The end of the tree will re-sap over and prevent moisture uptake from the reservoir if done too far ahead of time.

Drill a 3/8" wide pilot hole into the rough centre of the tree stump. This will be placed over the tree stand middle pin.

Place tree onto centre stand pin. Christmas tree removal bag layout is shown here. [After Christmas, the stand may be drained, all decorations (excluding lights) can be removed, and Christmas tree removal bag is pulled up on tree. Dry needles (upon takedown) will fall within the bag. Once the tree is outdoors, the lights would then be removed from the tree.]

One person holds the tree 'fairly straight' while the other person pulls opposite facing braces upright and places the wing nutted end against the trunk of the tree, between the branches. This is done for the other pair of braces as well.

Turn down the wing nuts on the threaded rod so that the brace 'bites' into the tree trunk. Do this step in pairs (wing nuts opposite to each other) and make them a little tighter than finger tight (FOR NOW). Tree should be held by second person relatively straight.

Once all wing nuts are a little bit tighter than finger tight, it should be possible for the second person to let go of the tree, and it should stand fairly securely upright. IF THERE IS ANY WOBBLE, TIGHTEN THE WING NUTS A LITTLE TIGHTER. It should be possible to see how 'close to straight' the tree is at this point. By loosening and tightening opposite wingnutted braces (and having the second person GENTLY ADJUST the tree location) it is possible to 'straighten' the tree in the stand by using the braces.

Once it looks pretty close to straight and secure, tree baling can be sliced off the tree using a razor knife or scissors. Starting at the top is advisable. Gently shake the branches to encourage them to fall 'a little'. Once the branches are open a little bit, look at the tree straightness again and adjust the tightness of the braces as required. Braces are sufficiently tight when there is no 'give' in the brace when pulled sideways (the brace should be firm into the side/bottom of the stand, and also into the trunk securely.)

Once tree is securely anchored, spun for best side etc., mix up Tree Life Xmas Tree Nutrient and fill the stand reservoir. This should take almost 2 packets of TreeLife to accomplish. Additional TreeLife is easy to mix up in a discarded 2L juice bottle, where it can be used to top up the solution. The tree will 'drink' this solution quite readily and the fluid height should be checked FOR CERTAIN the following morning after tree is set up, with more added as needed. All trees from year to year drink at different rates, and house temperature will dictate how fast a tree will drink - but a definite change in reservoir moisture level should be apparent. If very little or no change in the reservoir height has happened, it might be necessary to take the tree down and cut even more of the trunk off.

Your Christmas tree should stand undecorated for several hours to a half day in order so that the branches can 'relax' and the tree can open up. All trees are different, and there is no way to easily discern how much a tree will fall prior to putting it indoors into warmth. Once it has fallen, it is ready to decorate!
